Curious Arts are Wild and Curious

Curious Arts team have now launched Wild & Curious, a first of its kind, outdoor-based youth group for LGBTQIA+ and gender non-conforming young people. The group is designed to be a safe space to meet around the campfire, take part in creative activities and learn practical outdoor skills.

Curious Arts is a Newcastle Gateshead based not-for-profit committed to developing and celebrating LGBTQIA+ arts, culture and communities across the North East of England.

Since their launch in 2017, the organisation has developed multiple LGBTQIA+ youth focused projects, including arts development programmes, family events and performance platforms.

Birkheads Wild in rural Gateshead is the home of Wild & Curious. Founded in 2015 by Fiona O’Connor, Birkheads Wild aims to help local young people and families to discover, explore and enjoy the outdoors! The Wild & Curious group has exclusive access to the secluded 1.5 acre camp site, providing a safe, open space for all involved.

The Curious Festival has always had a youth wing which meets each year both as a supported meet and to create a performance or zine to be performed within the festival. Last year, due to Covid-19, the festival could not go ahead and therefore a lot of conversation came about on how to support these young people, other than through the festival. This was mainly through suggestions from the young people.

Curious Youth Arts Group was established to create a safe space where LGBTQIA+ and/or gender non-conforming young people feel supported and comfortable to connect with one another whilst exploring their creativity.

Guided by Group Leader, Zoe Murtagh, they meet once a month to catch-up with each other, whilst taking part in fun creative activities and be inspired by exploring different art-forms with guest artists!

On the following dates:

Saturday 17th July, 14:00pm – 16:00pm

Saturday 21st August, 14:00pm – 16:00pm
