ELIOT SMITH DANCE – Life and Other Stories

Eliot Smith Dance (ESD) prepare to dance across the North East in support of environmental causes!

This June and July ESD tour ‘LIFE & OTHER STORIES’ – four contemporary dance works that are filled with physical movement, passion, and excitement and will perform at Newcastle (Gosforth), Northumberland (Berwick upon Tweed, Warkworth, Pegswood, and Hexham), County Durham (Barnard Castle), and   Bradford.

The key piece LIFE, created by ESD’s creative director Eliot Smith, is a stirring performance with bold choreography performed by four cutting-edge dancers, with an original piece of music by award-winning composer Adam Johnson. The work takes its inspiration from the single sycamore tree in a dramatic dip often referred to as Sycamore Gap next to Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland National Park. The work highlights the climate change crisis and its impact on the environment through powerful movement, encouraging awareness and the call for action.

“With the ongoing environmental issues our planet is facing today, this season performances by ESD will engage our audiences to make a conscious connection to nature and its impact from the climate change crisis. By taking our passion for dance and using it for a good cause, ESD strive to reach its goal to encourage awareness and restore our environment locally and globally.” says Eliot Smith, the company’s Creative Director.

This ground-breaking performance includes other works by award-winning guest choreographers Martin Hylton and Balbir Singh, and the emerging choreographer Yamit Salazar, who is also ESD’s Rehearsal Director.

In addition to their live performances, ESD has been delivering dance workshops in schools, and community groups with their outreach work to engage with the youth locally.

The Company’s season is funded by Arts Council England, with further support from Museums Northumberland / Woodhorn Museum and Northumberland Arts Development, as well as by public   donations resulting from their recent successful Kickstarter campaign.
