Culture Trip: Silent Disco at Newcastle Cathedral

On Saturday night I went to the Newcastle Cathedral, not for a service, oh no but to a Silent Disco- I know sounds mad.

And it was, it was one of the best nights I have had in Newcastle for a while. Me and my mum booked it through Awesome Silent Disco for the Adult Evening 9-midnight slot, which cost around £50 all together.

We arrived just before 9 at the entrance to the Cathedral, our names were ticked off the list and we headed to collect our headphones. We had been to one of these events before so we knew how it worked, your headsets are connected to the 3 DJS or channels- blue, red and green and they are all playing music from either 80s, 90s or 00s and you can switch between the channels on your headphones. You can also control the volume aswell.

Once we got our headphones, we popped our coats at the cloakroom and got a drink at bar, we sat on some chairs and waited for more people to arrive. It felt a bit odd listening to the music of Cher and drinking San Peligrino in the Newcastle Cathedral, waiting for the party to start.

There was such a buzz about the place once the party had started, everyone was pulling some serious shapes and tearing up the dance floor. It was funny, I would be on the green channel and my mum and everyone else was on the red channel, I turned on the red channel and realised that that tune was right banger!

When you took your headphones off and heard everyone sing (I use that word lightly) it was entertaining to stay the least. What I liked was there was mix of age ranges but everyone was having a blast. It did not matter who you were, everyone was enjoying themselves and we were all singing and dancing the evening away.

As I had been to these events before I knew to dress like I was going to the gym, seriously- you need comfy clothes and shoes as it gets hot and sweaty. I had on jeggings, trainers, sports bra and football shirt- not very fashion forward I know but I knew I would feel comfortable.

Honestly it was such a joy to be dancing the night away and vibing off each other. Even if I was asked by a younger audience member if the Saturday Night dance was a new tiktok… (god I felt old)

The company are putting on a silent disco at Tynemouth Beach in the summer, which I plan on going to, so make sure you are signed up to the mailing list to not miss out.
